Chapter Eighteen

Shanna didn’t know Lynx could be so sentimental. His softly spoken words resonated in her heart and mind. The past few years she had been operating off sheer panic and in survival mode. It was time for her to take control of her mother’s legacy. She liked the way Lynx had phrased that.

She felt like a boulder had been hoisted off her shoulders. After their chat, she took a small notepad out of her purse and jotted down the items she would repair. She ended up with a lengthy to-do list.

She decided to tackle the interior first. The exterior could wait.

“Thanks again, Lynx,” she said, putting the notepad away once he had pulled into a parking space in the auction lot. “The repairs should have been a no-brainer, but I realize I was scared to move on and make these decisions without Mom. Doing that makes it real she’s not coming back. Ever.”

He was a great listener, and she liked him a lot. Well, her feelings might be deeper than like, but that was all she was prepared to acknowledge.

“I think you just needed a nudge,” he said. “But you’re welcome.”

He exited the car and came around to open her door. She grabbed her purse and placed her hand in his. A shock coursed through her entire body. She bit back a gasp. Her heart was finding its voice and was most insistent on being heard.

“Are you okay?” he asked, bending to peer at her.

“Yes,” she breathed out, fanning herself. “I forgot how hot it is out here after being in that cool car.”

He narrowed his eyes and studied her for a beat, but he gave a little nod and led her inside. Shanna emitted a small sigh of relief that he had accepted her excuse. Luckily, he couldn’t read her heart. She needed time to process.

The auction house was a good distraction. Shanna wandered the aisles, examining all sorts of relics, ancient and modern. There were clocks of all sizes and shapes, furniture, wall art, sconces, toys and dresses. Her eyes didn’t know where to focus, there was so much to see. It was a thrifty shopper’s delight and had something for every price range. There were about ten other people in the store who she presumed were also there for the auction.

Lynx wandered off to look at the watches and jewelry in the enclosed case while she went to the dress rack. Looking through the dresses, Shanna found a vintage hand-beaded wedding dress made of lace and silk. If she had to guess, she would say it was from the 1920s. Shanna dreamed of the woman who must have worn this dress and dared to picture herself wearing it. She eyed the two-hundred-dollar price tag and pursed her lips. It was well within her price range. And her size.

She placed it against her body and strutted over to the long mirror. The ivory color complemented her skin tone. She smiled at her reflection, envisioning her hair pulled up with a pearl comb and layered curls.
